Beading For A Cure (BFAC) - 2009

A few weeks ago I received my kit for the next Beading For A Cure fundraiser. For anyone that is not familiar with this group, please check out their website for more information and while you are there - peruse the galleries for some wonderful eye candy - images of beaded items that have been auctioned in the past and those for 2008 that are up now or coming up in the next several weeks.

Here's how the kit looked upon arrival...

Let's see how it looks when you take them all out to play together...

I like the colors. And I especially like the variety of sizes, I think it lends itself beautifully to bead embroidery.

I was not sure if I would be inspired to work on a flat piece such as a wall hanging or to go with a doll as I did last year. While I have created a few bracelets and one necklace by following patterns - I am a novice when it comes to jewelry. And though I enjoy stepping outside of my comfort zone with beading, I want to be able to create something that is appealing and that someone might actually want to buy. I guess it does not matter how I tried to justify it - I kept coming back to thoughts of a doll.

I plan to use one of Monica's doll forms, perfectly paired with a face from Dottie at FaceToFace - I recently purchased a few of her wonderful faces and have not yet had the opportunity to use one until now.

As the challenge allows - I can add one extra bead, but am not sure what it will be at this point - I have narrowed it down to 4 different options.

My plan is to start and complete my February Bead Journal page first, get the page for March started and then begin work on the doll.

I will post about it again once it is completed. And of course - I could change my mind about the whole doll thing and go in a completely different direction if some other inspiration takes hold.

Hey Grace,

I'm doing a doll for BFAC also. How big is your doll? Mine is approximately 10 inches. She will be from a design similar to one i received in a swap with Dot L in shape but much larger.

Thanks for the face site. I bookmarked it for future reference. I'm doing my own face for this doll. Can't wit to see them both finished.

Do you add a cord for hanging to your dolls? Or how do you display them? I like the colors for the one you are making now much better than the colors up for auction right now. I would think a lot of people would enjoy a doll.

Good Grief Grace,

Came by to see your BIF squares and what you've got going on and you've posted twice since then! I love the colors in the BFAC kit! The doll is wonderful and I know she'd be beautiful when your hands bring her to life! But, no matter, if some other inspiration takes hold... you'll produce a winner. ;-)
I LOVE your 'LOVE WELL' card! It says it all. The colors and simplicity are just perfect. Your grandmother sounds like quite the lady and I can tell you loved and adored her! Her love, goodness, and legacy live on through you! Your BIF squares are just Awesome! I love those vintage rose beads and your work is just splendid! Looking forward to seeing your February BJP too. I'm sorry, I know it is bad etiquette to leave a comment on a previous post but I couldn't help myself! :-)

I see greatness in the future of that lady by virtue of your beading. She is so exquisite and her elegant shape is begging for you to adorn it in luxury. Am waiting with bated breath to see what you do.

Isn't that the form Monica used for her 1st of 6 month doll challenge event last year? She looks awefully familiar, and since i never got around to working on mine, i can't wait to see what you do with this one! It will be spectacular as always. i just love looking at your art:) it is so inspirational.

Thanks all for stopping in and leaving a note.

Freebird - sometimes I added a beaded loop for hanging, sometimes not. The one I made for last year comes with the little chair, so no loop on that one.

Double Infinity - YES, that form is from the first month of Monica's challenge last year. I bought all the forms and had yet to work with one of them until now. Good eye!

Leaves of Grass

This is what you shall do: Love the earth and sun and the animals, despise riches, give alms to every one that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants, argue not concerning God, have patience and indulgence toward the people, take off your hat to nothing known or unknown or to any man or number of men, go freely with powerful uneducated persons and with the young and with the mothers of families, read these leaves in the open air every season of every year of your life, re-examine all you have been told at school or church or in any book, dismiss whatever insults your own soul, and your very flesh shall be a great poem and have the richest fluency not only in its words but in the silent lines of its lips and face and between the lashes of your eyes and in every motion and joint of your body - Walt Whitman
